Venerable Milarepa is one of the best-known saints in Tibet. For liberation of sentient beings, he left a legacy of numerous Dharma songs. They are not simply songs and poems, but a treasury of Buddhist philosophy. He sang, for example, “Forgive those who hurt you, and bless them with the mind of loving-kindness and compassion because karmic obscurations must be ours even though it is other people who made mistakes.” This example contains "Great Wisdom and Great Compassion" in Buddhism and tells us "inerrant principle of cause and effect".
Just ask yourself who could avoid any hurts in their life. No matter internal or external sufferings, such as competitions in workplace, physical discomfort, etc., will always cause pains which are often difficult to cure. Anger and hatred, meanwhile, arise spontaneously. These pains are vivid personal experience so that they are recognized as facts and sufferers would try every possible way to release those ill feelings. However, these sufferers could constantly hurt other victims in their attempts to escape from their pains. A great number of people are trapped in the vicious cycle without knowing how to jump out and live their whole life in such cyclic existence.
The Venerable tells us that all the sufferings in this life and those who make you painful appear in our life to justify inerrant principle of cause and effect. They take the risk of falling into hell to support the purification of your karmic obscurations. They torture you in this life to settle your karmic debt and you should adopt this in the mind of loving-kindness and compassion since those who struck you would inevitably reap what they sowed. We should understand that all these are resulted from our own karmic obscurations and the root cause of all sufferings could be traced back to ourselves.
Venerable Milarepa used to suffer unspeakable pain—properties were lost, home was far away, and he left his beloved mother and younger sister, and learned spells and incantations to revenge whoever hurt him. Nevertheless, the success of spells and incantations brought him huge karma of killing. The Venerable began to practice authentic Dharma to correct his own mistakes under such circumstances. He is a great master in practice and perceived the essence things by studying and raising mindfulness and awareness. He tells us: treat whoever and whatever hurt us in the mind of loving-kindness and compassion to change our behavior patterns—no longer hatred, liberation from sufferings and no more pains.
As ordinary people, it is difficult for us to stay away from any non-virtue, but if we understand how to trade off cause and effect and learn to treat everything in the mind of loving-kindness and compassion, adversity could be avoided to the greatest extent. In case of overcoming all unfavorable external conditions, our mind should be tolerant and compassionate. Hence, adversity could be truly settled and transferred. For example, we could not flatten the sandy land, but once we put on our shoes, rough frictions and discomforts from the land could be removed and hurts could be avoided effectively.
Forgive those who hurt you. Put on the armor of compassion and wisdom and walk on the path of life.
