有些修行者不知依止导师的重要性,只是按部就班的念诵或者以自己的理解、想象修行,此为修行中最大的过失。修行参不得丝毫自己的分别念,必须要完全放下自己的想法,依照导师的指导去实修。我们是凡夫人,没有导师的指引就等于是瞎子过河,即便是依照法本去做,仍有自己的偏见与不妥处。修行是非常细致的,稍有偏差就会影响未来。
需知,“依法不依人”故然重要,但是在修行过程中,相应于行者根机,会出现各种不同的境况,若单纯依止书本,则会产生种种迷惑甚至矛盾的情况。法本承载的所有文字皆为心之本性的诠释,为理论,而修行则是把理论转变为实际境界的过程。在《金刚萨垛续》中也针对修行者二十一种不同根机而讲解了二十一种印证方式。对于我们现在的阶段来说,更是有千差万别的调伏、指导方式。导师会针对每一个众生的每一个阶段给出不同的教言,而不仅仅是书上讲的一些方式。
故依止上师教言极其重要,诚如智悲光尊者所言:“修行者即使通达大圆满无上窍诀法最极殊胜之《大圆胜慧》、《文殊大圆满》,若不依止上师之窍诀,欲证实相见解,了不可得。”
For some Buddhist practitioners, the lack of understanding of the importance of taking refuge in and following Buddhist gurus leads to the biggest mistake in their practice – they simply keep reciting scriptures or practice in accordance with their own understanding or imagination. Instead of being mingled with any of our discriminating minds, we should totally let go of our own thoughts and follow the guidance of our gurus along the path of Buddhist practice. We mortals, if without the guidance from the gurus, are like blind people who try to cross a river by themselves. Even if we practice according to the Dharma texts, prejudice of our own and other inappropriateness are of sure existence. Buddhist practice involves a great deal of details and subtleness, for each and every one of us, even a tiny deviation will affect our future progress.
The tenet “follow the Dharma not the person” is indeed important, but in the process of our practice, various situations can arise according to the various capacities of the practitioners. If we simply adhere to the Dharma texts, all sorts of confusions and even contradictions will arise. Words on the Dharma texts are the illustrations of the true nature of our mind. They are the theories. Our practice is thus the process intended to transforming the theories into the realization of the state of our mind. Like in the Tantra of Vajarsattva, there are twenty-one ways of practicing that are illustrated, each intended for a given type of practitioners as defined by their capacity. For practices at our current stages, methods of a far greater variety are needed to tame our own mind. The gurus will give specific advice that fits individual disciple’s stage of practice, on top of the teachings from the Dharma texts.
In this sense, taking refuge in and following our gurus’ teachings is profoundly important. As Rigdzin Jigme Lingpa (a Tibetan tertön of the Nyingma sect of Tibetan Buddhism) once said, “Even if the practitioners may have well understood The Victorious Wisdom of the Great Perfection and Manjushri Great Perfection, both of which are the supreme teachings of the Great Perfection practice, it remains unachievable for them to realize the ultimate wisdom if without the teachings from their gurus.”
