烦恼的因实际上就是非理（不合理）的颠倒意识，也就是本来不净执为清净、本来无常执为常有、本来无我执为有我、本来是苦而反执为乐，总共有四大类颠倒分别念。如对女人的不净身体生起贪染心时，首先是执著女人的身体为清净，从中可以得到快乐，然后就认为她美丽悦意，产生了如此非理执著，则自然滋生烦恼与贪心，因此烦恼的因就是非理作意。

    其次是烦恼的缘，即是烦恼所缘之外境，如生嗔恨心时，即对外境的鬼神、怨敌生起嗔心，贪心也是对外面的色、声、香、味、触等法生起贪心，故依靠外境而产生为烦恼的缘。

Resolve the Net of Delusion with the Wonderful Contemplating and Investigating Wisdom (P-12)

The lead of vexation is, in fact, a perverted mind state. In other words, the cause of vexation is to attach defilement as if it were lustration, to attach impermanence as if it were permanence, to attach anatman as if there were a self, to attach suffering as if it were joyfulness. Therefore, there are four categories of perverted mind states in all. When someone generates greed against women’s unholy body, he starts with an attachment of pureness of it, from it he can find happiness. He then notices her beauty and agreeableness. With the generation of such perverted attachment, he will then propagate vexation and greed. That’s why we say that the lead of vexation is a perverted mind state.

When we discuss the conditions of vexation, it is the external circumstances to which it is attached. Hatred, for instance, is to generate hatred against those external ghosts, deities or enemies, while greed is generated against the external phenomena such as form, sound, smell, taste, and touch. Thus, the external circumstances depending on which it is generated is the conditions of vexation.
