众生无量无边,烦恼病也有八万四千种之多,对此也只有以智慧和大悲才能彻底调伏,如龙树菩萨在《宝鬘论》中指出:唯有大悲宝性藏的菩提心,即智悲无二无别的菩提心才能断除无边烦恼。显宗是如此提倡,在无上密乘中也需要着重提出,如在密乘中修持生起次第时,首先要修持三等持。在第一个真如等持时,观想一切诸法成为空性;然后是显位等持,即对无量不了达空性的有情生起大悲心;最后是因位等持,就是观想自身成为本尊身相。同样,在无上大圆满中,大悲心与菩提心也是不可或缺的。

There are infinite beings, and there are 84,000 kinds of distress and diseases, only intelligence and great pity for mortals can completely tame and control these. As Bodhisattva Nagarjuna pointed out in <Precious Garland> that only the mind for bodhi with the store-consciousness of great pity for mortals and the precious, always pure nature, that is, the awakened mind with identity of wisdom and pity, can cut off and overcome the endless bonds of passion. It is so advocated by Exoteric Buddhism, and unsurpassed Esoteric Buddhism should also emphasize, for example when practicing the stages of birth and what arises from it within Tantra, it should firstly practice the three states of meditative absorption. During the first samadhi on the elimination of all phenomena and on the realization of bhuttathata, meditate and think all that exist become the nature of the void; then the exoteric position of holding one’s mind in calmness, that is, to have a heart that seeks to save the suffering for the infinite sentient beings that don’t know the nature of the void; and finally the causative position of holding one’s mind in calmness, that is, to imagine one’s own body becomes one's personal tantric deity. Similarly, great pity for mortals and the mind of bodhi are indispensable in the unsurpassed Great Completion.
