How Do We View a Tree?
People of different identities would view a tree differently. Merchants would immediately think of its trading value; Botanists care about things like its characteristics and habitat; artists see the beauty in the tree and give it some sorts of artistic meanings; Buddhist practitioners would see the impermanence in it.
Every person creates a unique image of the world out of his or her own imagination, and judges everything in it accordingly.
Is it the tree's problem that every person views it differently? Not really. It’s viewed differently because, simply, people's ideas of what it should be vary. Therefore, prior to achieving Buddhahood, we are all just seeing our own version of the world, and most of us suffer in this distorted image.
However, the more we jump out of our identities, the more beauty we will see. At the same time, we will have more freedom. In fact, things in their true forms are all neutral; we see goods and evils only because we choose to. The longer we confine ourselves in a place, the more it imprisons us.
